Banquet Purpose
For the past 29 years the Unsung Heroes Banquet has been held to recognize and honor our “Unsung Heroes”. Webster’s Dictionary defines a hero as “a person of distinguished courage and ability who is admired for brave deeds and noble qualities”. Each year we seek to identify such great people and bring them together for a gala event just to say “Thank you for making a difference.”
We are living in one of the most restless times this world has ever known and invariably it is our Unsung Heroes who subtly see us through. Oftentimes, these heroes don’t even realize that something they have said, or communicated in their actions, has made a significant impact on someone else’s life.
Every day when we pick up the newspaper, or watch TV, we see people losing their lives to drugs, alcoholism, and crime. We see children killing children, while other people are being robbed, raped, or murdered. It’s simply frightening; yes, we need a hero! Violence in the home is producing battered children, battered wives and even battered husbands; yes, we need a hero! Pornography, incest and children being snatched off the streets are all frightening; yes, we need a hero! Feeling unsafe in our own home is frightening; yes, we need a hero! The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – the actuality of crime, racism, sexism, inadequate housing for the poor, eroding system of public education, hunger, poverty and outrageous healthcare cost face us every day. We Need A Hero!!
Well, we have found many “Unsung Heroes” in our community and we are privileged to be able to recognize and honor them. Each recipient will be presented with an engraved plaque, and as we do each year, the “Mother of the Year” and “Father of the Year” recipients will also receive monetary awards.
Even now, as we are gearing up for this year’s Unsung Heroes celebration, if you know someone who has made an impact in their community, please let us know so that we can submit their name(s) for consideration.
Remember! It is God who makes all things possible. He is the reason we are here and it is to Him we give all the glory!
